LIFESTYLES
Residents of the Bluefield
area readily acknowledge the high quality of life here. Few communities
can match the amenities of the Bluefields.
Many
larger cities proclaim to be two to three hours from the mountains,
while the Bluefields are in the mountains, located along the foothills
of one of the most beautiful valley settings to be found anywhere.
East
River Mountain peaks at 3,400 feet to form a natural border between
West Virginia and Virginia. The high elevation of the Bluefields
helps moderate summer heat and humidity, offering a pleasant breeze
even on the hottest day.
No
matter what the time of year, beauty encompasses the area. The whites
and blues of winter, the greening of the mountains in the spring,
the sunny glow of a comfortable 75 degree summer day and brilliant
colors of fall are hues of the four distinct seasons that arrive
each year in breathtaking fashion. An overlook tops East River Mountain,
offering spectacular views of seasonal changes, such as the scene
in Mel Grubb's world renowned photo, "Fog Over East River Mountain."
The
mild climate of Bluefield makes it easy to enjoy fishing, hiking,
hunting, golfing, and many more leisurely outdoor activities.
ARTS
AND ENTERTAINMENT
Since
1935, The Community Concert Association has brought quality entertainment
to the area from the famous Arthur Fiedler's Boston Pops Orchestra,
to the famous Ruth Page Chicago Opera Ballet. Other Cultural amenities
include a dance theater and art galleries which provide the area
with work produced by local artisans, and the Crab Orchard Museum
and Pioneer park in nearby Tazewell, VA.
The Bluefield Arts Center
also hosts local holiday musicals, classic works and contemporary
dramas and comedies through the popular Summit Players Theater.
The
Bluefields have long had a love affair with sports and other outdoor
activities. The Bluefield Orioles, a farm club of the Baltimore
Orioles, attract thousands and plans are underway to construct a
modern soccer complex. Pipestem State Park, located minutes from
Bluefield, attracts visitors from far and wide to enjoy activities
from gourmet restaurants to golf and horseback riding.
